Which is better for undergraduate research opportunities, UIUC or Case Western?

Case Western is usually the easier place to get into undergraduate research early and work closely with faculty. Its smaller undergraduate population, strong research culture, and emphasis on close student-professor interaction tend to make access more straightforward than at UIUC. At UIUC, the research scale is enormous and the opportunities are real, but the size of the university can make the process feel more competitive and less personal at first.

One big difference is access. At Case Western, undergrads often connect with professors through smaller classes, direct outreach, and structured opportunities tied to departments and labs, including work connected to the medical school and nearby hospitals. That setup can make it easier to move from interest to an actual position, especially if you want hands-on mentoring rather than just being one student among many.

At UIUC, the advantage is breadth. It has a huge research enterprise, especially in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, and agriculture, so there may be more labs overall and more specialized projects. But because UIUC is much larger, students often need to be more proactive and persistent to stand out, and early research access can depend more on initiative, timing, and the specific department.

Another practical difference is the faculty environment.
