USC or Washington University in St. Louis for neuroscience: which is better for undergrad research and pre-med preparation?

I’m trying to choose between USC and Washington University in St. Louis for neuroscience, and both seem strong in different ways. I want to study a field that will give me solid research opportunities and keep me on track if I decide to apply to med school later.

Its size can be an advantage if you want flexibility, interdisciplinary options, or exposure to areas like computational neuroscience, health policy, or industry-adjacent biomedical work. The tradeoff is that navigating opportunities may require a bit more initiative, and the undergraduate neuroscience experience can feel less singularly central to the school’s identity than it does at WashU.

If your priority is the strongest all-in-one neuroscience plus pre-med environment, I’d lean toward Washington University in St. Louis. I’d choose USC instead only if you are genuinely excited by the LA setting, want broader institutional scale, or see yourself taking advantage of USC’s wider urban and medical connections in a more self-directed way.
