UC Riverside vs University of Richmond for a business major: which school is the better choice?

For business specifically, University of Richmond is often the more compelling option if you want a smaller, more personalized undergraduate experience with strong access to professors, advising, and internships. Richmond’s Robins School of Business is a central part of the university, and the school is known for combining business with liberal arts in a way that can be very useful for finance, marketing, management, and consulting paths. UCR can still be a good choice, especially if cost, location in California, or access to a large public university environment matters more to you.

Richmond tends to fit the student who wants close faculty relationships, smaller classes, and a campus where undergraduates get a lot of attention. That can matter in business because recruiting, recommendations, and mentorship often come from the strength of those relationships. Being near Richmond, Virginia also gives students access to internships with corporations, financial firms, nonprofits, and government-related organizations during the school year, not just in the summer.

UC Riverside makes more sense for the student who wants the scale and energy of a public research university, especially one connected to Southern California’s broader economy. The A. Gary Anderson School of Management offers solid business preparation, and UCR students can benefit from the UC name, a diverse student body, and proximity to industries across the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, and Orange County. For a motivated student who is comfortable seeking out opportunities independently, UCR can absolutely lead to strong outcomes.

Another important difference is campus feel. Richmond is residential, smaller, and more contained, which many students find easier for building community and staying connected to professors and classmates. UCR is larger and less intimate, which can be exciting but also means you may need to be more proactive about networking, office hours, clubs, and internship searches.

If cost is similar, I would lean toward University of Richmond for business because the business school experience is likely to feel more focused and supported. If UCR is meaningfully more affordable, or if you want to build a career in California and like a larger public-school setting, UCR becomes a very reasonable choice.
