Is Wake Forest or Notre Dame better for liberal arts?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and academic culture: Notre Dame offers a larger, more traditional national university environment with a very strong humanities and core-curriculum experience, while Wake Forest tends to feel smaller, more seminar-based, and more intentionally focused on undergraduate teaching. For a student specifically prioritizing a liberal arts style education, Wake often feels closer to that experience day to day because of its size, classroom atmosphere, and emphasis on faculty interaction. Notre Dame, though, has exceptional strength in classic liberal arts fields, especially history, philosophy, theology, political science, and English, and its residential system creates a strong undergraduate community.

Wake Forest is one of the more undergraduate-centered research universities in the country. It has no engineering school dominating campus culture, and its classes, advising, and campus identity often feel more oriented around discussion, writing, and close faculty contact. If by “liberal arts experience” you mean smaller classes, easier access to professors, and a less pre-professional vibe, Wake has a real edge.

Notre Dame is also deeply committed to undergraduate education, but it feels broader and more institutionally structured. Its Core Curriculum means all students engage seriously with the humanities, and the school has unusual strength in disciplines tied to ethics, religion, political thought, and classical inquiry. Even students outside the humanities are pulled into a fairly robust liberal arts foundation, which is a real plus if you want intellectual breadth rather than narrow specialization.

The social and cultural atmosphere matters here too. Notre Dame has a stronger campus-wide identity, more tradition, and a more visibly Catholic intellectual life woven into academics and student culture. Wake is also historically connected to a Christian tradition, but the day-to-day feel is usually less defined by that identity and often comes across as a bit more flexible and understated.

If the question is which school is better specifically for a liberal arts undergraduate experience, I would give Wake Forest the slight advantage. If the question is which has the more powerful overall liberal arts reputation in certain humanities fields and a more distinctive intellectual core, Notre Dame is very compelling. For most students using “liberal arts” to mean close teaching, thoughtful discussion, and an undergraduate-first atmosphere, Wake Forest is probably the cleaner match.
