Colgate vs Boston College for pre-med: which is better overall?

I’m trying to decide between Colgate and Boston College and I want to go pre-med. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is usually the better fit for a student planning to apply to med school later.

I’m looking at things like academics, advising, research access, and whether one school tends to be easier for pre-med students to handle well.

For pre-med, Boston College tends to make more sense for the student who wants a broader university environment, easier access to Boston-area hospitals and research settings, and a larger peer network in the health professions. Colgate is often more appealing for someone who wants a smaller liberal arts setting, close faculty relationships, and a campus culture where undergraduate teaching is the center of the experience.

At Boston College, the biggest practical advantage is location. Being near major medical centers, research hospitals, clinics, and public health organizations can make it easier to find clinical volunteering, shadowing, and research during the school year instead of relying mostly on summers.

Colgate fits the student who learns best in smaller classes and wants more direct faculty access from the start. That can matter a lot for pre-med because strong recommendation letters, personalized advising, and real relationships with professors are valuable when it is time to apply to medical school. Undergraduate research is very accessible there, though the range of nearby clinical opportunities is not as naturally built in as it is in Boston, so students may need to plan more intentionally for hospital exposure and off-campus experiences.

On manageability, neither school is easy, and pre-med is demanding at both. Colgate can feel more personal and less sprawling, which some students find helpful for staying academically grounded. BC can offer more external opportunities, but balancing those with a rigorous course load takes initiative and good time management.

If your priority is hands-on access to hospitals, urban health opportunities, and a wider pre-med ecosystem during the academic year, Boston College has a real edge. If your priority is close faculty attention, a classic liberal arts experience, and a smaller academic community where it may be easier to build mentorship, Colgate is a very compelling pre-med path.
