Colgate or Wake Forest for pre-med: which is better overall?

Wake Forest is the stronger overall pick for pre-med.

That medical ecosystem matters because pre-med is not just about strong science classes. Wake students can build relevant experience during the school year without having to rely as heavily on summer breaks or travel, and that makes it easier to develop a sustained record of patient-facing work and research. For medical school prep, having those opportunities close at hand is a meaningful edge.

Wake also has a more established overall orientation toward health professions. The advising structure, campus culture around pre-health, and the sheer volume of students pursuing medicine tend to produce more organized pathways for course planning, committee processes, and extracurricular sequencing. At a school where pre-med is a common route, it is usually easier to find peers, mentors, labs, and student organizations tied to medicine and public health.

Colgate is still a very good college with strong academics, small classes, and close faculty relationships, and those things do help with recommendation letters and classroom support. But for a student specifically focused on the pre-med path, its rural setting and lack of an attached medical center make the outside-the-classroom side of preparation less naturally built in. You can absolutely get to medical school from Colgate, but Wake Forest offers a more complete pre-med environment from day one.
