Is University of Washington or University of Virginia better for finance careers?
I am trying to decide between these two schools and want to focus on long-term career outcomes in finance. I know both have strong reputations, but I am mainly looking at which one has better access to recruiting, internships, and alumni connections for finance jobs.
I am a high school student trying to make a practical choice, so I want to know which school is generally better positioned for someone who wants to go into finance after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is geography and recruiting reach: UVA is much more plugged into East Coast finance pipelines, especially New York, while UW has stronger ties in the Seattle and broader West Coast market, where tech, consulting, and corporate finance are often more visible than traditional Wall Street recruiting. For pure finance access, UVA tends to offer the deeper on-campus recruiting base, a more finance-centered undergraduate business path through McIntire, and an alumni network that is especially active in investment banking, asset management, and related fields.
At UVA, McIntire is a major advantage if you are serious about finance. It has a long-established reputation with employers, and UVA places very well into banking and other competitive finance roles relative to most public universities. The alumni network is also a real asset, especially in New York, Washington, and Charlotte, where a lot of finance recruiting and internship networking happens.
UW can absolutely lead to strong finance outcomes, but the path is usually a bit more regional and less centered on traditional high-finance recruiting. Foster is respected, and UW students do well in corporate finance, accounting, fintech-adjacent roles, and finance positions tied to major Northwest employers. If your definition of finance includes corporate finance at large companies, tech finance, or staying on the West Coast, UW becomes more compelling.
For long-term career outcomes specifically in finance, UVA has the clearer edge. It gives you broader access to national recruiting and a denser alumni presence in classic finance hubs, which matters a lot for internships and first-job placement. UW is still a strong option, but if your goal is maximizing access to the widest range of finance recruiting opportunities, UVA is the safer bet.
