Maryland has the more social and active overall student experience for most students, especially if you want a campus with a busier weekend scene, easier access to off-campus options, and a stronger sense that something is always happening. Its location in College Park, right next to Washington, DC, gives students both a traditional Big Ten campus and quick access to concerts, internships, food spots, and city events. That tends to make the day-to-day vibe feel more energetic and outward-facing.

One big difference is what happens off campus. At Maryland, students can stay in College Park for campus events or hop on the Metro into DC, which adds a lot to weekends and free time. Purdue has plenty of student activity too, but West Lafayette feels more self-contained, so the social scene depends more heavily on what is happening on campus or within the immediate college town.
