Is UC San Diego or Northwestern better for a business major?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Northwestern offers a much more established, direct path into business-related academics and recruiting, while UC San Diego is stronger if you want a large public university experience with lower in-state cost and more flexibility to combine business with economics, data, or STEM. UC San Diego does have business-related options, especially through economics, management science, data-driven fields, but it is not as business-centered at the undergraduate level.

For pure career positioning in business, Northwestern has the clearer edge. Employers know it well, and the school has a strong reputation for placing students into consulting, finance, marketing, and management-oriented roles. It also tends to offer more structured access to internships, student organizations, and networking pipelines that are specifically tied to business careers.

UC San Diego is still a very good option, especially for students interested in the business side of technology, analytics, entrepreneurship, or biotech. Its location and academic strengths make it especially appealing if you want to blend business with quantitative skills. But compared with Northwestern, the undergraduate business identity is less central, so you may need to be more intentional about building that path yourself.

If the question is which school is stronger for a business major and future business opportunities, Northwestern is the better answer. UC San Diego makes more sense when cost matters a lot, especially for California residents, or when you want a broader STEM-heavy environment and are comfortable creating your own business path rather than stepping into one that is already more built out.
