Is Northwestern or Syracuse better for journalism?

Northwestern’s Medill School is one of the most established names in journalism, with especially strong connections in national media, strong internship pipelines, and a curriculum that blends reporting with media, technology, and storytelling across platforms. Syracuse’s Newhouse School is also highly respected and is often seen as one of the clearest journalism-focused undergraduate experiences, with a very media-heavy campus culture and deep professional preparation from early on.

For pure journalism prestige and breadth of career access, Northwestern usually has the edge. Medill carries exceptional name recognition in newsrooms, and Northwestern’s overall university resources add a lot if your interests expand into politics, economics, data, film, or other adjacent areas that can strengthen your reporting. The quarter system can also let students explore more classes and combinations, which matters if you want to pair journalism with another field.

Syracuse is especially appealing if you want to be surrounded by students who are intensely focused on communications and media from day one. Newhouse has a very strong alumni network, excellent hands-on opportunities, and a reputation for producing career-ready students in journalism, broadcast, digital media, and sports media. Some students prefer that Newhouse feels more directly centered on media training rather than embedded within a broader elite university environment.

In terms of career preparation, both can absolutely get you into journalism, but Northwestern is more often viewed as the higher-ceiling option, especially for national prestige and flexibility beyond traditional journalism. Syracuse is still a serious contender and may be the more comfortable choice for someone who wants an undergraduate experience built very visibly around communications. If the question is which school is more broadly considered better for journalism, the answer is Northwestern, with Syracuse as a very strong and more specialized alternative.
