For sheer volume of internship options during the school year, UT usually has the edge because Austin has a dense concentration of startups, major tech offices, venture activity, consulting-adjacent work, and corporate roles nearby.

UT benefits a lot from being in Austin, which matters if you want part-time internships during the semester. Companies recruit heavily from McCombs and UT engineering, and the school’s size means there are many employer events, student organizations with corporate ties, and alumni spread across Texas and beyond. In tech especially, UT’s local ecosystem is hard to ignore.

Rice’s advantage is that Houston is a major economic center with strong access to energy, healthcare, biotech, engineering, and finance-related opportunities. For students interested in those sectors, Rice can be extremely well positioned. The alumni network is smaller than UT’s, but it is often described as tight-knit and responsive, and the lower student-to-opportunity competition on campus can help when pursuing certain roles.

For business and tech specifically, UT Austin is likely to offer broader internship access overall. That does not mean every individual student will have an easier time there, but the combination of Austin location, employer presence, and large recruiting pipelines makes it more realistic to find multiple opportunities during both the school year and summer.

Rice is still a very strong option, especially if you value individualized support or may lean toward industries where Houston is especially strong. But if the question is specifically which school provides better overall access to internships in tech or business, UT Austin has the more robust advantage.
