One major difference is how each school is read by employers outside academia. Harvard tends to function as a shorthand for elite selection and strong networks in fields like consulting, finance, law, politics, and some corporate recruiting pipelines. Berkeley absolutely has top employers recruiting there too, especially in tech, engineering, data science, economics, and research-heavy fields, but the signal is often more tied to the strength of the program than to pure brand aura alone.

For graduate and professional school admissions, both names are powerful, but Harvard still has the broader prestige edge. Berkeley is viewed as an academic powerhouse, particularly in STEM, computer science, mathematics, and many social sciences, so in those spaces it can be every bit as impressive and sometimes more relevant. That said, if someone is asking only which name has more across-the-board prestige, most people in admissions or hiring would say Harvard.

Prestige also matters less over time than many students expect. Once you have strong internships, work experience, recommendations, and actual results, the difference between two highly respected schools shrinks a lot. Between these two, the bigger practical question is often not which one is more prestigious, but which one sets you up better for the field you want to enter.
