Michigan vs CMU for computer science: which is better for an undergraduate CS degree?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon come up for computer science. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare for an undergrad who wants a solid CS education and good job outcomes.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally considered the stronger choice for computer science overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and intensity versus breadth and flexibility. Carnegie Mellon is more singularly identified with computer science, and its School of Computer Science has an unusually deep concentration of faculty, research, and upper-level course options. Michigan also has an excellent CS program, but it sits inside a much broader large-university environment where you get more room to explore across departments, majors, and campus experiences.

For undergraduate CS specifically, CMU is more often viewed as the standout academic name. Its CS culture is exceptionally strong, and the path from classes to research labs to top software, AI, and systems opportunities is very direct. If someone says they want one of the most rigorous and best-known undergraduate CS educations in the country, CMU is usually the first of these two that comes to mind.

Michigan is still a top-tier place to study CS, and in some practical outcomes the gap is smaller than online discussions make it sound. Michigan places students very well into major tech companies, offers strong research and project opportunities, and gives you access to a huge alumni network. It can be especially appealing if you want a classic large-campus experience, more interdisciplinary freedom, or a less narrowly CS-centered identity.

One thing that matters a lot is academic environment. CMU tends to be more intense and more concentrated around computing and engineering, while Michigan often feels broader, bigger, and more balanced socially and academically. Some students thrive in CMU’s highly technical atmosphere; others do better when they can combine strong CS with the wider offerings of a major public university.

If the question is which school is more widely considered the stronger undergraduate CS program overall, the answer is Carnegie Mellon. Michigan is still an outstanding option and may be the smarter personal choice for some students, but on pure undergraduate computer science reputation, rigor, and specialization, CMU has the edge.
