Is Boston University worth it compared with the University of Wisconsin for an out-of-state student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus setting and specialization: Boston University usually gives you a denser urban experience and stronger access to Boston-based internships during the school year, while the University of Wisconsin offers a more traditional campus, Big Ten college atmosphere, and often much better value for an out-of-state student. Academically, both are well-regarded research universities with broad offerings, so this is rarely a case where one is so far ahead that a major price gap automatically makes sense. For many students, BU is only worth the extra cost if you have a specific reason to use what Boston offers in a direct, day-to-day way.

On academics, BU can be especially appealing for fields tied closely to city-based professional access, such as communications, business, international relations, public health, and some pre-professional paths where internships during the semester matter a lot. Wisconsin is also strong across many disciplines, especially in STEM, economics, political science, and the social sciences, and it has the scale and reputation of a major public flagship. In most majors, employers and grad schools will view both as credible, serious institutions.

The campus experience is very different. BU is woven into Boston rather than centered around a classic enclosed campus, so some students love the energy, transit access, and independence, while others find it less cohesive. Wisconsin has a much more recognizable college-town feel in Madison, with school spirit, a defined campus community, and a setting that many students find easier to settle into socially.

In value terms, I would be cautious about paying a large premium for BU unless the extra cost is manageable for your family without major borrowing. Wisconsin is hard to beat when you combine academic quality, student life, alumni reach, and lower cost.
