Is UChicago or USC better for economics undergrad?

I’m a high school senior deciding where to apply and keep seeing UChicago and USC mentioned for economics. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m trying to understand which one has the better reputation and opportunities specifically for an economics major.

I’m mostly looking at the strength of the program itself and how it might help with internships, recruiting, and grad school later.

UChicago has the stronger undergraduate reputation in economics. Its economics department is one of the most influential in the field, the major is especially rigorous and theory-driven, and the school’s name carries exceptional weight for PhD placement, research, and analytically focused recruiting.

One big differentiator is the department itself. At UChicago, economics is a signature strength of the university, with a deep bench of faculty, a long-standing intellectual identity around econ, and a curriculum known for serious quantitative and theoretical training. If you want the place where economics is central to the school’s academic brand, UChicago is the clearer pick.

Another difference is grad school and research signaling. UChicago tends to stand out more for students who may want an economics PhD, a research assistant role, or graduate study in closely related fields like public policy, finance, or statistics. The training is often seen as more intense, which can matter if you want strong preparation for advanced economics work.

For internships and recruiting, the gap is narrower than people sometimes think, but UChicago still has the edge for economics-specific prestige. USC does very well, especially through its Los Angeles location, strong alumni network, and access to business, media, real estate, and West Coast finance opportunities. But USC is more often discussed as a broader pre-professional environment, while UChicago is more often singled out specifically for economics.

USC can still be very attractive if you want a less theory-heavy atmosphere, more crossover with business and industry, and easier access to internships during the school year. But on the question you asked, which school is better for economics undergrad in reputation and academic strength, UChicago is the one that stands out more clearly.
