NYU or Penn for city life: which campus feels more urban and connected to the city?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that NYU is embedded in the city with almost no traditional campus boundary, while Penn gives you a defined campus in a city neighborhood. At NYU, your daily life runs straight through Greenwich Village streets, subway stops, restaurants, shops, and city crowds. At Penn, you are in West Philadelphia with easy access to Center City, but you still return to a more contained college campus at the end of the day.

NYU will feel more urban and more connected to city life day to day. There is no real separation between school space and city space, so going to class, grabbing food, studying, or meeting friends often means moving through Manhattan itself. Washington Square Park functions like a campus hub, but it is also a public city space, which gives NYU a very distinct urban energy.

Penn is definitely urban, but in a different way. Its campus is cohesive, walkable, and clearly identifiable, which many students like because it gives some structure and community within Philadelphia. You can get into the rest of the city fairly easily by SEPTA or rideshare, but the everyday feeling is less like you are constantly immersed in the city and more like you have a university base inside a city.

If what you want is the strongest possible sense that your college experience is inseparable from the city around you, NYU is the clearer answer. Penn can offer a better balance between urban access and campus cohesion, but for pure city integration, NYU stands out more.
