Is Carnegie Mellon or USC more competitive for admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Carnegie Mellon is usually tougher at the program level, while USC can feel broader and less predictable across majors. CMU’s admissions difficulty is heavily shaped by what you are applying for, and some of its flagship programs are among the hardest in the country to enter. USC is also very selective, but its larger size and wider spread of schools can make it feel a bit less uniformly intense than CMU.

For an average strong applicant, Carnegie Mellon is often the more competitive of the two, especially if you are applying to computer science, engineering, design, drama, or business-related programs with high demand. CMU tends to have a more academically exacting reputation in admissions, and certain colleges there are known for being exceptionally hard to access even for students with very strong grades and scores.

USC is absolutely not easy, and some of its programs, especially film, business, and engineering, can be extremely selective in their own right. But in a general head-to-head comparison, CMU more often gets viewed as the harder admit because of its smaller size, more specialized academic structure, and the intensity of demand in its strongest areas.
