Is UVA or NC State better for a business major?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list and keep coming back to UVA and NC State for business. Both seem like strong choices, but I’m not sure which one would be the better overall fit for a student interested in business.

I’m mainly trying to compare them based on the strength of the business program, not just general college reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UVA offers a more established, higher-profile path for students who want a traditional business education, while NC State is stronger if you want business tied closely to analytics, technology, or operations. At UVA, the McIntire School of Commerce is the main draw, and it is especially well known for finance, accounting, management, and strong recruiting. At NC State, business is housed in the Poole College of Management, which has solid offerings in areas like business administration, supply chain, and analytics, with a more applied, industry-connected feel.

If you are comparing business programs specifically, UVA has the edge in prestige and national visibility. McIntire is one of the best-known undergraduate business options in the country, and that reputation tends to matter for internships and first-job recruiting, especially in finance and consulting. UVA also benefits from a very strong alumni network and a business program that is central to how many students plan their academic path.

NC State is still a credible business option, but it is usually not viewed at the same level as UVA for pure business reputation. Its advantage is that it can be especially appealing for students who want to combine business with STEM, data, entrepreneurship, or supply chain work. Being in the Research Triangle also creates useful access to employers in tech, biotech, and corporate operations.

If your priority is the strongest overall undergraduate business brand and the broadest recruiting pull, UVA is the better pick. If you are more interested in a practical, tech-adjacent business education and like NC State’s environment and cost better, NC State can make a lot of sense, but on business strength alone UVA comes out ahead.
