Is Georgetown generally more selective than Bucknell?

The practical difference is that Georgetown requires a stronger overall admissions profile to be competitive, while Bucknell remains selective but is more attainable for a broader range of well-prepared applicants. Georgetown draws a particularly large pool of applicants interested in its Washington, D.C. location, international affairs, public policy, business, and other preprofessional pathways. Bucknell’s applicant pool is also academically strong, but its smaller liberal arts-focused setting and different institutional priorities create a less restrictive admissions environment overall.

At both schools, grades in a demanding high school curriculum matter far more than any single credential, and neither should be treated as a safety by a student without a solid academic record. Georgetown applicants typically need to stand out not only academically but also through sustained involvement, intellectual interests, recommendations, and a convincing fit with the university. Bucknell similarly evaluates students holistically, with attention to how they would contribute to a close residential campus community.

The gap does not mean an applicant who is viable at Bucknell is automatically uncompetitive at Georgetown. A student with excellent preparation and a compelling reason for Georgetown may reasonably apply to both. But for college-list planning, Georgetown should be placed in a more ambitious category than Bucknell for most applicants.
