Is Northwestern or Notre Dame more fun for undergraduates?

For most undergraduates, Northwestern tends to feel more fun in a broader, less structured way because of its location in Evanston next to Chicago, its mix of social scenes, and a campus culture that gives students a lot of freedom in how they spend weekends. You can do campus events one night, take the train into Chicago the next day, and still find plenty happening in residence halls, student orgs, performances, or smaller gatherings. Notre Dame absolutely has a strong social life too, but it is more campus-centered and shaped more heavily by school traditions and its residential system.

One big difference is the weekend ecosystem. At Northwestern, students have easier access to concerts, restaurants, sports in the city, lakefront activities, and off-campus social options, so the experience can feel more varied. That tends to matter a lot for students who get restless staying in one campus bubble.

At Notre Dame, the social scene is more self-contained, which some students really love. Dorm culture is unusually central there, and a lot of friendships, events, and traditions run through residence halls. Football weekends are a major draw, and the school has a strong sense of unity, but some students feel weekends are less dynamic if they want more beyond campus life.

The vibe also differs in tone. Northwestern often feels more independent, artsy, and flexible, with students spread across many subcultures rather than one dominant campus identity. Notre Dame can feel tighter-knit and more spirited, but also more traditional, with a stronger shared culture that not everyone experiences as equally carefree.

If “fun” to you means variety, spontaneity, and easy access to both campus life and a major city, Northwestern has the edge. If your idea of fun is big traditions, intense school spirit, and a social scene anchored by dorm life and football, Notre Dame can be more appealing.
