One big difference is where the social energy happens. At UMass, a lot of it stays on or very close to campus because Amherst is a classic college-town environment and students are not as spread out. That usually creates a stronger "everyone is around" feeling, especially on weekends.

At San Diego State, the social scene is definitely active, but it can feel more split between campus life, Greek life, off-campus apartments, and the broader San Diego area.
