Boston University vs Rutgers social life: which school has the better social scene?

The biggest practical tradeoff is city-based social life at Boston University versus campus-centered social life at Rutgers. BU gives you Boston itself as part of the social scene, but that can make student life feel more spread out and less unified. Rutgers, especially in New Brunswick, tends to feel more traditionally college-social because so much student activity revolves around the university community, Big Ten sports, buses between campuses, and a large in-state student population that creates a strong shared scene.

If by “outgoing, active, and easy to meet people” you mean a visible campus energy where it feels like students are constantly around each other, Rutgers usually has the edge. It has more of the classic large-state-school atmosphere: bigger sports culture, more tailgates and school-spirit events, and a social life that is often easier to plug into quickly. People often describe Rutgers as having more obvious weekend activity tied directly to student life.

BU is social too, but in a different way. Because it sits right in Boston and stretches along Commonwealth Avenue, the experience can feel more independent and decentralized. Students have access to restaurants, internships, concerts, and city events, which is exciting, but it can also mean social life is less concentrated on one campus and sometimes takes more initiative to build. BU can feel busy and lively without always feeling tightly knit.

For day-to-day ease of meeting people, Rutgers is often the more immediately outgoing environment. For students who like social energy that is built into the campus itself, it tends to feel more accessible. BU can absolutely be active and fun, but the social scene is usually less cohesive and more self-directed, so my pick for the stronger overall social scene is Rutgers.
