UCLA vs Caltech for physics: which is better for an undergraduate interested in research and grad school prep?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges for physics, and these two keep coming up for me. I know both are strong academically, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better fit for an undergrad who wants research opportunities and a solid path toward physics grad school.

I’m mostly looking for the overall undergrad experience in physics, not just prestige.

At UCLA, there are many opportunities, especially in a department tied to a major research university, but the larger scale means initiative matters more. You may need to email more professors, navigate bigger classes early on, and compete more for visibility.

For grad school prep, both can get you there. Caltech is especially compelling if you already know you want an intense, highly technical, physics-first education. UCLA is compelling if you want elite physics training without spending four years in such a concentrated STEM bubble.
