For a student who specifically wants communications, Syracuse stands out because the Newhouse School is one of the school’s signature strengths and is deeply built around media, journalism, advertising, PR, and related fields. WashU is an excellent university, but it is not the place most students target for communications specifically.

At Syracuse, communications is not a side offering. It is central to the university’s identity, which usually means more specialized coursework, stronger industry connections in that area, and a student community heavily oriented toward media and communications careers. That matters because in fields like communications, access to student media, internships, alumni pipelines, and faculty with industry backgrounds can shape your opportunities as much as the degree title itself.

WashU may still appeal if you want a more broadly academic environment and think you might shift away from communications, combine it with another field, or prioritize the school’s overall academic reputation across disciplines. But if your goal is to study communications in a setting where that major is a flagship strength, Syracuse has the clearer edge.

So between these two, Syracuse is the better choice for communications. WashU is the more broadly prestigious university, but for this particular major, Syracuse is the one with the stronger identity, infrastructure, and career alignment.
