WashU vs UC Berkeley for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and placement?

I’m trying to decide between WashU and UC Berkeley and want to study finance or something close to it. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m mostly curious about which one gives a better path into finance careers.

I’m thinking about things like recruiting access, alumni connections, and how easy it is to get internships and full-time offers from each school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. UC Berkeley puts you in a much larger, more finance-saturated ecosystem, with especially strong pipelines to West Coast investment banking, asset management, fintech, and consulting-adjacent roles, but you will compete with a very large pool of talented students for clubs, recruiting attention, and advising. WashU usually offers a smaller, more personal environment where it can be easier to build relationships with professors, advisors, and classmates, though its finance recruiting footprint is not as broad or self-sustaining as Berkeley’s.

For pure recruiting power, Berkeley has the edge. Its Haas brand carries a lot of weight in finance, and even students outside Haas can tap into a deep alumni base and proximity to San Francisco. Firms know Berkeley well, and there is simply more volume in terms of students entering finance-related paths, which helps create recurring pipelines.

WashU absolutely places students into strong finance outcomes, including banking and investment roles, but the path can be a bit more relationship-driven and less automatic. You may need to be more intentional about networking across regions, especially if your target is New York or a very specific finance niche. The upside is that at WashU, strong students can stand out more easily because the overall pool is smaller.

Internship access also leans Berkeley, especially during the school year. Being in California matters for in-semester networking, informational interviews, and Bay Area opportunities. At WashU, you can still land excellent internships, but geography is less of a built-in advantage.

If your main priority is maximizing finance recruiting reach and alumni density, Berkeley is the better bet.
