Is Washington University in St. Louis or UCLA better for undergraduate business?

I’m trying to compare Washington University in St. Louis and UCLA for business as a high school senior, and I keep seeing different opinions online. I care most about the strength of the business program, recruiting opportunities, and whether one school gives better access to internships and alumni connections for business careers.

I’m not looking at overall college rankings as much as the actual undergraduate business experience and career outcomes.

For undergraduate business specifically, Washington University in St. Louis usually offers the more direct and structured business experience. WashU has the Olin Business School for undergraduates, so you enter a true business school environment early, take business classes sooner, and have access to advising, recruiting, and alumni networks centered on business from the start. UCLA is an outstanding university with strong outcomes in finance, consulting, and entrepreneurship, but it does not have a traditional standalone undergraduate business major in the same way WashU does.

WashU tends to fit the student who wants a clear business curriculum, smaller-scale advising, and a campus culture where business is an established undergraduate path. Olin undergrads benefit from dedicated coursework in finance, accounting, marketing, and related areas, and that can make recruiting feel more organized, especially for students who know business is their lane. For someone comparing actual undergraduate business training, that structure matters.

UCLA makes more sense for the student who wants business-adjacent opportunities within a huge, high-powered public university ecosystem. Many UCLA students interested in business come through economics, business economics, math/econ, or student organizations tied to finance, consulting, and startups. The upside is location and scale: Los Angeles offers a deep internship market during the school year, and UCLA’s name and alumni presence are very strong across California, entertainment business, tech, and entrepreneurship.

For recruiting, the difference is less about which school is respected and more about how the path is built. At WashU, the business pipeline is more formalized. At UCLA, strong outcomes are absolutely possible, but students often need to be more proactive about building the business path through clubs, networking, and selective pre-professional communities.

If your priority is the strongest undergraduate business program itself, with a defined business school experience, WashU has the edge. If you want broader flexibility and especially see yourself using the Los Angeles market for internships during college, UCLA can be extremely compelling, but it is a less straightforward undergraduate business setup.
