WashU vs Georgetown: which is better for city life as a student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Georgetown gives you a much more embedded, walkable city experience day to day, while WashU offers access to a city but from a more campus-centered and slightly more separate setting. Georgetown sits in a dense, active neighborhood of Washington, DC where students regularly walk to coffee shops, restaurants, the waterfront, internships, and other neighborhoods. WashU is near appealing parts of St. Louis, especially the Delmar Loop, Forest Park, and nearby districts, but everyday city life usually takes a bit more intention.

If what you mean by “city life” is stepping off campus and immediately feeling like you are in the middle of things, Georgetown is the clearer match. The Georgetown neighborhood itself is lively and highly walkable, and DC makes it easy to get beyond campus for museums, events, politics, nightlife, and internships. Even though Georgetown’s campus has its own defined feel, students are closely tied to the city around them in a way that feels constant rather than occasional.

WashU has a beautiful, self-contained campus and students do use the surrounding city, but it feels more like having city options nearby than living directly inside an urban environment. Forest Park is a huge plus, and there are good food and entertainment areas around campus, but St. Louis is more spread out and many outings involve planning transportation rather than just wandering out your front door. For some students that balance is ideal because you get a strong campus community without the intensity of a fully urban setting.

For pure everyday city connection, Georgetown comes out ahead. WashU can still give you a very enjoyable urban-adjacent college experience, but if you care a lot about walking off campus and immediately having the city as part of your routine, Georgetown is more likely to feel the way you want.
