Which colleges don't require supplemental essays?
I'm working on my college list and I'm pretty overwhelmed with all the essays some schools want. I know my Common App personal statement will take a lot of time, so I'm hoping to find some good schools where that's all I have to submit (other than the basic info).
Does anyone know of any colleges, preferably in the Northeast or Midwest, that don't have any supplemental essays? I want to apply to a mix of reaches and targets if possible. Open to public or private schools. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

I’m a Yale graduate and college admissions advisor with over 8 years of experience helping students gain admission to top universities like Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. I’ve worked with many students who needed to balance their application workload, so I can share strong options in the Northeast and Midwest that often don’t require supplemental essays — meaning you’d just submit the Common App personal statement and basic application info.
Here are a few schools in those regions that, in recent cycles, have generally not required supplements (though requirements can change, so always double-check before applying):
* University of Vermont (UVM), VT – Public, strong academics, no additional essays for most applicants.
* DePaul University, IL – Large private university, no standard supplements for most programs.
* University of Cincinnati, OH – Most programs require only the Common App essay (some selective programs may have extras).
* University of Pittsburgh, PA – Usually straightforward; often no required supplements except for certain majors.
* Indiana University Bloomington, IN – Well-regarded public school, Common App essay only.
* Case Western Reserve University, OH – Sometimes requires only the Common App personal statement.
For a reach option, Northeastern University, MA, sometimes alternates between requiring and not requiring supplements, depending on the cycle. In some years, it’s just the Common App essay.
If you’re open to smaller liberal arts schools, these have occasionally had no supplements:
* Clark University, MA
* College of Wooster, OH
* Beloit College, WI
One of my students last year applied to DePaul and only needed to submit the Common App personal statement plus basic application info, which freed up more time to focus on her other essays.
Be sure to confirm each school’s current requirements in the Common App or on their admissions site, since some programs (like nursing or honors) may add a supplement. Even adding just a couple of no-supplement schools to your list can make application season much more manageable.
Over the past 8 years, I’ve helped thousands of students craft essays and applications that stand out at the most selective schools, including the Ivy League and Stanford. To give each student the highest level of attention, I keep my caseload small — booking early guarantees a place. I’m currently offering free consultations for new Sundial families where we’ll review your goals, brainstorm essay ideas, and outline a clear application strategy. You can book directly through my profile.
I know this process can feel overwhelming at times, but you are fully capable of navigating it successfully. I’m always here to help guide you through it.
