Is UC Berkeley or Cornell better for data science?

I'm trying to compare these two schools for data science because that's the major I'm most interested in right now. I know both are strong overall, but I'm not sure which one is generally considered better for that field.

I'm mostly asking about the overall reputation and academic strength of the data science program, not a current admissions question.

UC Berkeley has the edge for data science. Berkeley’s data science ecosystem is unusually mature for an undergraduate, with a dedicated Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society and one of the most visible undergraduate data science programs in the country. It also benefits from deep ties to statistics, computer science, and machine learning across campus, so the field feels central rather than adjacent.

One big differentiator is program reputation and identity. Berkeley helped shape undergraduate data science as a distinct academic area, and its curriculum is widely recognized for combining technical training with real-world applications and social context. When people in academia and industry talk about standout undergraduate data science programs, Berkeley comes up very quickly.

Another difference is the surrounding ecosystem. Berkeley is embedded in the Bay Area, which means strong proximity to tech companies, startups, research labs, and applied data work. That location does not automatically make the academics better, but it does reinforce the field’s presence through internships, projects, speakers, and recruiting.

Cornell is still excellent, especially if your interests lean more toward computer science, operations research, applied math, or a more engineering-heavy path into data work. It has serious strength in computing and quantitative fields, and employers will absolutely respect a Cornell degree. But if the question is specifically which school is more broadly seen as a top destination for data science itself, Berkeley is the one with the clearer reputation advantage.
