Is UC Berkeley or Notre Dame better for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Notre Dame and I’m interested in finance after college. I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m mainly wondering which one has the better reputation and recruiting path for finance careers.

I’m trying to figure out which school would give me a better shot at internships and a first job in finance.

UC Berkeley has the edge for finance careers, especially if you are aiming at investment banking, buy-side roles, or West Coast finance recruiting. Haas has a very strong reputation with employers, and the alumni network in banking, asset management, and tech-related finance is especially deep. If your goal is maximizing access to finance recruiting pipelines, Berkeley is usually the more powerful platform.

One big differentiator is employer access. Berkeley benefits from its location and the strength of Haas, so students see a wide range of finance employers from bulge bracket banks to boutiques, venture-focused finance, and corporate finance at major companies. The Bay Area connection also matters if you are interested in tech banking, fintech, or corporate strategy roles that overlap with finance.

Another is brand recognition inside finance itself. Notre Dame is very well respected and has an exceptionally loyal alumni network, particularly in certain East Coast and Midwest pipelines, but Berkeley tends to carry more weight across a broader set of finance employers and geographies.

The main reason to pause on Berkeley is internal access. If you are unsure about navigating a large public university, Notre Dame can feel more personal and sometimes easier to leverage because of its tighter-knit community and hands-on support. Notre Dame absolutely can lead to strong finance outcomes, especially for a student who will use the alumni network aggressively, but Berkeley offers the higher ceiling and the denser recruiting ecosystem for finance.
