Caltech vs UC Berkeley for prestige: which is generally considered more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad public-university name recognition versus a smaller, ultra-elite specialist reputation. UC Berkeley has enormous visibility worldwide because of its size, flagship public status, and strength across many departments, while Caltech carries a more rarefied image in STEM because it is tiny and closely associated with top-tier scientific research. In everyday conversation, more people may instantly know Berkeley; in academic and technical circles, Caltech often has the more exceptional aura.

So in terms of prestige alone, neither clearly dominates in every setting. Berkeley is one of the most respected university names in the country and has especially strong reputation in engineering, computer science, economics, and the sciences.
