Should I choose Columbia or Tufts for an economics major?

I’m trying to decide between Columbia and Tufts for undergrad and I want to study economics. Both seem like good fits in different ways, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which one would be better specifically for an econ student.

I’m mostly trying to understand how each school compares for economics as a major and overall academic experience.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and intensity versus flexibility and campus feel. Columbia gives you a larger economics ecosystem in New York City, with access to internships during the school year. Tufts offers a more intimate undergraduate experience, easier faculty access, and a campus culture that many students find less pressured and more balanced day to day.

For economics specifically, Columbia has the edge. Its department is larger, and closely connected to opportunities in Manhattan. If you think you may want investment banking, consulting, economic research, or graduate study in economics, Columbia’s location and network are real advantages.

Tufts is still a strong place to study econ, especially if you want more interaction with professors and a college environment where undergraduates are the clear center of attention. The interdisciplinary culture can be a plus if your interests overlap with international relations, public policy, or data-focused social science. Compared with Columbia, though, the economics world around you is smaller.

Academically, Columbia will likely feel more demanding and more structured because of the Core Curriculum. Some students love that shared intellectual foundation; others feel it limits freedom. Tufts gives you more room to shape your coursework earlier and often feels more collaborative than intensely competitive.

If cost is similar and you are excited by a rigorous econ program with unusually strong access to New York opportunities, I would lean Columbia. I’d pick Tufts over Columbia only if you strongly prefer a more personal undergraduate environment and think you would thrive much better in that setting, because for economics alone, Columbia is the stronger option.
