Michigan has the edge for overall social life for the average student. Ann Arbor is more integrated with campus, the school spirit around football and other sports is unusually visible, and the social scene is easier to tap into even if you are not in one specific club, Greek organization, or niche community.

One big difference is the surrounding town. Michigan sits in the middle of Ann Arbor, which feels like a true college town with restaurants, coffee shops, apartments, bars, student events, and busy streets all woven into daily student life. That makes it easier to be social casually, because hanging out does not require as much planning. Cornell has plenty happening, but Ithaca is more spread out and the campus geography can make social life feel a bit more segmented.

Another factor is campus energy. Michigan has a very public, high-volume social culture driven by major athletics, especially football weekends, plus a large student body that creates a constant buzz.
