Is UC Davis or Notre Dame worth the cost for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between UC Davis and Notre Dame, and the price difference is a big factor for my family. Both seem like good schools, but I’m not sure how to think about whether a more expensive private school is actually worth it compared with a strong public university.

I’m mostly looking for a general way to judge return on investment for an undergraduate degree, not just rankings or prestige.

For most students, UC Davis is the better value unless Notre Dame is close in price after aid or offers something unusually aligned with your goals. UC Davis gives you a well-known research university, broad academic options, and lower total debt risk, while Notre Dame’s higher sticker price only makes sense if the net cost is manageable and you would really use what it offers in alumni access, campus culture, and undergraduate attention.

The biggest differentiator is net cost over four years, not the published price. A strong public university like UC Davis can leave you with far more flexibility after graduation because lower borrowing affects where you can live, what jobs you can take, and whether grad school stays affordable. If Notre Dame would require significantly more loans from either you or your parents, that extra cost is often hard to justify at the undergraduate level.

Another useful difference is the kind of undergraduate experience you are paying for. Notre Dame is known for a highly residential campus, tight alumni loyalty, and a more intimate private-school environment with strong school spirit and a distinct Catholic identity. UC Davis offers the scale of a major public research campus, excellent faculty and research access, and especially strong depth in fields tied to science, agriculture, environmental studies, biological sciences, and engineering.

Career payoff should be judged by outcomes in your intended field, not brand name alone. If you want an area where Notre Dame has especially strong pipelines, such as certain business, finance, consulting, or alumni-network-driven paths, the premium can be more defensible. If your plans lean toward STEM, pre-health, research, or you may need graduate school later, UC Davis often makes more financial sense because preserving money for med school, law school, or a master’s can matter more than paying extra now.

A practical way to judge ROI is to compare four things side by side: your actual four-year net cost, estimated debt at graduation, likely starting salary in your field, and whether the school gives you access to internships, mentoring, and recruiting you would not otherwise get. If Notre Dame is only modestly more expensive, the private-school advantages may be worth serious consideration. If the gap is large, UC Davis is usually the smarter financial decision.
