Is the University of Pittsburgh or the University of Maryland better for business majors?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list and both Pitt and Maryland are on it. I’m interested in business and want to choose the school that would be the better overall fit for that major.

I’m mainly trying to compare them in a general sense, like academics, internship opportunities, and how well the business program is regarded.

The University of Maryland has the edge for business majors. Its Robert H. Smith School of Business is the more prominent and specialized undergraduate business program, it offers direct access to the Washington, DC area for internships, and Maryland’s business recruiting network is typically broader and more visible than Pitt’s for finance, consulting, and corporate roles.

One major difference is the structure of the academic program. At Maryland, business students are part of a dedicated business school with well-known undergraduate pathways in areas like finance, accounting, marketing, information systems, and operations. That tends to create a more defined business identity, more concentrated advising, and stronger employer recognition tied specifically to the Smith name.

Internship access is another clear separator. Maryland benefits a lot from its location near Washington, DC, which opens doors to internships not only with private companies but also with consulting firms, government-related organizations, nonprofits, and major employers throughout the DC metro area. Pitt has solid opportunities in Pittsburgh, especially with healthcare, finance, and regional companies, but the Maryland location usually gives business students a wider range of in-semester options.

Reputation also leans Maryland for business specifically. Pitt is a strong university overall and has a respected business school, but Maryland is more often the school people have in mind when they think of a nationally recognized undergraduate business program. That can matter for recruiting, alumni reach, and the depth of business-focused student organizations and career pipelines.

Pitt still has real advantages, especially if you prefer a slightly more affordable option depending on your aid package, a city-campus feel in Pittsburgh, or a business experience connected to a large public research university with strong professional outcomes. But on the business question alone, Maryland comes out ahead.
