Notre Dame vs NYU for finance careers: which is better for breaking into banking and finance?
I’m a high school senior trying to choose between Notre Dame and NYU, and I’m interested in finance. Both seem like strong options, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one has the better reputation for banking and finance careers.
I’m mainly trying to understand which school generally gives students a stronger path into finance recruiting and internships.

For finance, both can work very well, but they create different paths. NYU tends to offer the more direct, high-volume route into banking because Stern is deeply tied to New York recruiting and students can intern during the school year. Notre Dame is also very strong, especially in investment banking, and it has an unusually loyal alumni network that can punch above what people expect from a non-NYC campus.
NYU makes the most sense for the student who wants to be in the middle of the action from day one. Being in New York matters for coffee chats, in-semester internships, firm events, and simply having banks and buy-side firms nearby. If you are proactive, comfortable with a fast and competitive environment, and want frequent access to finance employers during the academic year, NYU offers a very efficient setup.
Notre Dame fits the student who wants a more traditional residential college experience but still wants serious access to Wall Street. The school has a strong reputation in finance circles, and its alumni network is known for being especially responsive and willing to help undergrads break in. For students who value community, mentorship, and a campus culture that can feel more close-knit, Notre Dame can be a very powerful launchpad.
For pure recruiting convenience, NYU has the edge because location is such a practical advantage. For relationship-driven recruiting, especially if you are the type to build strong mentor connections and use alumni outreach well, Notre Dame is often stronger than outsiders realize.
One important distinction is that at NYU, your experience can depend a lot on whether you are in Stern versus another NYU school trying to recruit for finance. Stern carries the clearest brand signal for banking.
