For journalism specifically, Northwestern is the clearer choice. Medill is one of the most established journalism schools in the country, it offers a curriculum built around reporting, multimedia storytelling, and industry-facing work, and its location near Chicago creates strong access to internships, campus-year opportunities, and media networking. If your main goal is to be trained directly for reporting, editing, broadcast, or digital media, Northwestern gives you a more specialized and better-connected path.

Northwestern fits the student who wants journalism to be central from the start. Medill is not just a major tucked inside a broader college; it is a dedicated school with a strong professional identity, a large alumni network in media, and lots of structured opportunities in student publications, experiential learning, and reporting outside the classroom. Chicago matters here too. Being close to a major media market makes semester-time internships and source-based reporting much more practical than at many campuses.

Notre Dame makes more sense for a student who wants a broader liberal arts or humanities experience and may be interested in journalism alongside another academic focus. It has strong writing, political science, and American studies options, and students can absolutely build serious media experience through student publications and internships.
