Is UC Berkeley worth the cost compared with UC Santa Cruz for an undergraduate degree?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz and I’m worried about whether the extra cost of Berkeley is actually worth it. I know both are good schools, but I’m not sure how much of a difference the name, academics, and opportunities make after graduation.

I’m mostly trying to figure out whether the higher price tag at Berkeley usually pays off enough to justify it.

Yes, for many students Berkeley is worth the extra cost over UC Santa Cruz, especially if the price difference is manageable without major debt. Berkeley offers a much broader range of high-demand majors, more intensive recruiting from top employers, and stronger national and international name recognition. Those differences tend to matter most in fields like engineering, computer science, business, economics, and certain research-heavy sciences.

One major differentiator is employer access. Berkeley draws far more on-campus recruiting from large tech firms, consulting companies, finance employers, and national nonprofits, and its alumni network is unusually deep in the Bay Area and beyond. That does not guarantee a better outcome, but it does make internships, referrals, and first-job opportunities easier to find at scale.

Another is academic depth and flexibility. Berkeley has more departments operating at the highest level of research and a larger concentration of faculty, labs, institutes, and advanced coursework. For students who want to explore specialized interests, work on serious research as undergraduates, or be surrounded by a highly ambitious peer group, that environment can translate into real long-term value.

The Berkeley name also carries more weight after graduation, particularly outside California. For competitive grad programs and jobs where people are scanning resumes quickly, Berkeley tends to get an immediate positive reaction in a way UC Santa Cruz less often does. That advantage is not everything, but it is real.

The main reason not to pay more is financial. If choosing Berkeley means taking on substantial debt, the premium becomes much harder to justify, especially for majors where starting salaries are less predictable. UC Santa Cruz can still lead to excellent outcomes, and a lower-cost degree often creates more freedom after college than a more prestigious one financed expensively.
