Is the University of Maryland or Fordham worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Maryland usually offers broader academic depth and stronger value per dollar, while Fordham’s main premium is its New York City location and the internship access that comes with it. Maryland is a large public research university with wide offerings across STEM, business, policy, and the social sciences, plus strong employer and government connections near D.C. Fordham is a well-known private university with a more intimate feel, solid liberal arts strengths, and real access to internships in finance, media, nonprofits, and other NYC-based fields.

For return on investment, Maryland is more often the easier school to justify, especially if your cost there is meaningfully lower. It has a stronger reputation in several high-demand areas, a big alumni network, and the advantages of a flagship public university. For many students, that combination makes the payoff more reliable because you are not depending as heavily on one city or one style of opportunity to make the degree worth it.

Fordham can still be worth the extra cost, but usually only when the difference is not too large or when its setting clearly matches your goals. If you are serious about careers that benefit from being in New York during the school year, the location can matter in a very practical way. That said, paying a major premium for Fordham is harder to defend if Maryland is substantially cheaper, because Fordham is respected but not typically seen as offering a universal academic or career advantage big enough to erase a large price gap.

So in a head-to-head value conversation, Maryland tends to come out ahead unless Fordham is close in cost or you have a specific reason that NYC access, smaller private-school environment, or a particular Fordham program would materially change your undergraduate experience and early career options.
