Which is generally considered more fun for undergraduates, UC Berkeley or Tulane?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Tulane, and I keep hearing different things about the social life at both schools. I know “fun” is subjective, but I’m mainly trying to get a sense of which one tends to have a more lively, social, and enjoyable college experience for undergrads.

I’d like a general comparison from students or alumni who know both campuses.

Tulane is more often seen as the more overtly fun undergraduate experience in the social sense. Its campus culture is closely tied to New Orleans, which gives students easy access to live music, festivals, restaurants, and nightlife, and the university has a reputation for an active, spirited student social scene. Berkeley can absolutely be exciting and enjoyable, but the energy there is more often described as intense, intellectually driven, and politically engaged than centered on a classic social-campus vibe.

Tulane tends to appeal to students who want their college life to feel lively beyond the classroom on a regular basis. New Orleans is a huge part of that. Students often talk about the city itself as an extension of campus, and the social calendar can feel unusually full because of local events, traditions, and a stronger party reputation than Berkeley has.

Berkeley fits students who think “fun” includes being around highly motivated people, exploring the Bay Area, joining active student organizations, and having a lot happening culturally and academically at once. There is plenty to do, and being near Oakland and San Francisco adds a lot, but the undergraduate atmosphere is not usually described as carefree. Many students experience Berkeley as stimulating and memorable, though also more demanding and sometimes more stressful.

If your idea of fun is a visibly social campus with easier access to party culture and a city built around celebration, Tulane is the one people usually point to. If your idea of fun is being in a high-energy environment with smart, ambitious peers and constant activity, Berkeley can be a great experience, but it is less often the answer when people mean socially lively in the traditional college sense.
