Is USC or Duke generally considered more fun for undergraduates?

I'm trying to decide between USC and Duke and keep hearing that both have a strong social scene, but in different ways.

I'm mainly curious about which one tends to feel more fun overall for a typical undergrad in terms of campus vibe, weekends, and student life.

Both can be very fun, but they feel fun in different ways. USC tends to offer a more open, city-connected social life with lots happening on and off campus in Los Angeles, while Duke often feels more concentrated and campus-centered, with school spirit and weekend traditions playing a bigger role. For a typical undergrad, USC can feel broader and more varied; Duke can feel tighter-knit and more immersive.

USC often appeals to students who like having options. You get a classic campus, but you are also in LA, so weekends can include concerts, food spots, beach trips, internships, sporting events, and social scenes that are not limited to the university itself. The vibe can feel energetic, image-conscious, and busy in a way some students love because there is almost always something to do.

Duke usually fits students who want the social scene to revolve more around the school community itself. Basketball culture is a huge part of student life, and campus traditions, residential communities, and student events tend to create a strong shared atmosphere. A lot of students describe Duke as having a very engaged, spirited campus, where weekends often feel centered on who is around you rather than what city you can tap into.

If your idea of fun includes spontaneity, a wider mix of people, and access to a major city, USC often comes across as more exciting. If your idea of fun is intense campus pride, a strong undergraduate bubble, and a social life that feels highly connected to classmates, Duke can feel more rewarding.

The main tradeoff is that USC’s fun can be more decentralized, so your experience depends partly on how much you explore. Duke’s can feel easier to plug into quickly, but also more shaped by the campus culture itself.
