Which is better for biology: UC Berkeley or Boston University?

I’m a high school student trying to figure out where I’d be better off if I want to study biology in college. Both UC Berkeley and Boston University seem strong, but I’m not sure how to compare them in terms of academics, research opportunities, and overall fit for a biology major.

I’m trying to make a realistic choice based on the kind of biology experience each school tends to offer.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and style: UC Berkeley offers a larger, more research-driven biology ecosystem with exceptional depth across subfields, while Boston University tends to feel more structured and accessible, especially for undergraduates who want a clearer path into labs, advising, and pre-health support. Berkeley has world-class strength in areas like molecular biology, genetics, ecology, and integrative biology, and it benefits from proximity to major Bay Area research institutions. BU is also a serious research university, with strong biology, neuroscience, biomedical, and medical campus connections, but the undergraduate experience is often easier to navigate.

For academics alone, Berkeley has the edge in biology. Its biology options are unusually broad, and the department ecosystem is deep enough that students can pivot between lab science, computational biology, environmental biology, and public health-oriented work without running out of advanced coursework or faculty expertise.

For research, both schools can deliver, but the path can look different. At Berkeley, the upside is enormous because there are so many labs and nearby opportunities, yet the size of the school means you may need to be more proactive and persistent to secure the experiences you want. At BU, research is still very real, especially through its biology department, medical campus, and related institutes, and some students find it easier to build close faculty relationships earlier.

If the question is pure biology strength, Berkeley comes out ahead. If you want excellent biology in a setting that may feel somewhat more manageable day to day, BU is a very credible choice.
