How does Boston College admissions difficulty compare to Georgetown for undergraduate applicants?

I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how selective these two schools are compared with each other. I know both are very competitive, but I keep seeing them grouped together on college lists and I’m not sure if one is generally considered harder to get into than the other.

I’m a junior starting to build my college list, so I want a simple comparison of their overall admissions difficulty.

Georgetown is typically considered harder to get into than Boston College for undergraduate applicants. Both are highly selective private universities with strong national reputations, but Georgetown is often viewed as a step more competitive overall. It also has a distinctive admissions process, including its own application and required alumni interview in most cases, which can make it feel more intensive.

Boston College is still very difficult to get into. But in most college advising contexts, Georgetown is the one students usually treat as the more difficult reach. If you are building a list, it makes sense to place both in the highly selective category, with Georgetown usually the tougher admit.

The student who is especially drawn to Georgetown often has a very strong academic record plus a clear interest in areas the school is known for, like government, international affairs, policy, business, or public service. Georgetown tends to attract applicants with polished, high-level profiles from across the country and abroad, so the competition can feel especially intense.

Boston College often appeals to students looking for a selective Jesuit university with strong academics, a traditional campus feel, and a balance of intellectual life, school spirit, and service. That does not make admission easy at all, but the overall bar is usually seen as slightly less punishing than Georgetown’s.

For a junior making a college list, the simplest way to think about it is that Boston College is a very competitive reach or high target only in rare cases, while Georgetown is more often treated as a firmer reach even for excellent students. The difference is not huge, but it is real enough that most applicants should not assume they are equally difficult.
