How does UT Austin admissions difficulty compare to Cal Poly for undergraduates?

I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how selective these two schools are compared with each other. I know both are popular public universities, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one is harder to get into.

I’m mostly looking for a general comparison of admissions difficulty so I can understand how they stack up for a regular high school applicant.

UT Austin is usually harder to get into overall, especially for applicants outside Texas and for high-demand majors, though Cal Poly is also quite selective and can be very tough in specific programs.

One big difference is how each school builds its class. UT Austin has Texas auto-admit rules for many in-state students, which means the competition for the remaining spots, especially for out-of-state applicants, can be intense. It is also known for very competitive entry into majors like business, engineering, and computer science, so the difficulty is not just getting into the university but getting into the program you want.

Cal Poly is selective in a different way because it admits by major and tends to evaluate applicants with a strong focus on academic preparation tied to that program. That can make majors such as engineering, architecture, and computer science especially difficult, even if the university as a whole may not feel quite as inaccessible as UT Austin. For a regular applicant, that means your major choice matters a lot at Cal Poly from the start.

For most students comparing the two at a broad level, UT Austin carries the tougher admissions reputation because of its national demand, limited room after in-state guarantees, and very competitive flagship status. Cal Poly is absolutely not easy, but it is more often a school where selectivity swings sharply by major rather than feeling uniformly as hard across the board.
