University of Copenhagen vs Yale for pre-med: which is better for medical school preparation?

I’m trying to figure out which school would be the stronger choice for pre-med preparation. I know Yale has the typical U.S. pre-med path, but the University of Copenhagen is also really interesting to me academically.

I want to understand which option would generally set a student up better for getting into medical school and completing the usual pre-med requirements.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Yale is built around the U.S. pre-med pipeline, while the University of Copenhagen is not. Yale offers direct access to the standard prerequisite courses, pre-health advising, affiliated hospital and research opportunities, and a campus system designed around American medical school applications. Copenhagen is an excellent university academically, but it does not naturally line up with the usual U.S. pre-med structure in the same way.

For medical school preparation aimed at U.S. MD or DO programs, Yale is the much cleaner and stronger option. You would be able to complete the expected science sequence in a familiar format, find clinical exposure more easily through a U.S. healthcare setting, and get advising from people who regularly guide students through recommendation letters and MCAT planning. That matters because medical schools care not just about coursework, but also about clinical experience, physician shadowing, and a coherent application path.

Copenhagen becomes more complicated if your goal is U.S. medical school. Even if the academics are excellent, some U.S. med schools prefer or require prerequisite coursework from U.S. or Canadian institutions, and clinical volunteering or shadowing abroad may not translate as smoothly. You would likely need to do more independent planning to confirm course equivalencies, secure U.S.-relevant experiences, and make sure you are meeting expectations that Yale students can access more routinely.

If your interest is in studying medicine in Europe, or if you are open to paths outside the standard U.S. pre-med route, Copenhagen could still make sense.
