Which is better for pre-med: University of Copenhagen or Penn?

I’m trying to figure out whether University of Copenhagen or Penn would be the better choice if I want to go pre-med. I know the pre-med path can look different depending on the school, so I’m trying to understand which one gives a stronger foundation for eventually applying to medical school.

Penn is the better choice for pre-med if your goal is eventually applying to medical school in the United States. It has a well-established pre-health advising system, direct access to major clinical and research settings through Penn Medicine and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a large undergraduate culture built around U.S. med school prerequisites and application timelines. Those pieces matter because pre-med is not just about strong science classes, but also about advising, shadowing, clinical exposure, committee support, and recommendation systems.

One major differentiator is how closely Penn is tied to the U.S. medical school pipeline. Penn undergraduates can pursue the exact prerequisite coursework U.S. medical schools expect, and the university has structured support for MCAT planning, physician shadowing, research, and service. That makes it much easier to build the kind of application U.S. admissions committees are used to evaluating.

Another key difference is access to clinical and biomedical opportunities. At Penn, being part of a major academic medical center means undergraduates are surrounded by hospitals, labs, public health programs, and medical faculty. That does not automatically make pre-med easy, but it does create a dense environment for finding relevant experiences that are important for med school applicants.

The University of Copenhagen is an excellent university, especially in biomedical sciences and research, but it is not designed around the U.S. pre-med model. If you plan to attend medical school in Denmark or elsewhere in Europe, it could make sense, especially if you are comfortable navigating a different educational and licensing system. For a student aiming at U.S. medical schools, Penn offers a much more direct and practical foundation.
