Is the University of Michigan or the University of Illinois better for computer science?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools keep coming up for computer science. I know they’re both strong overall, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered better for CS and why.

I’m mostly comparing them for the strength of the program itself, not things like cost or campus life.

For computer science itself, both are excellent, but University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is more often singled out as the slightly stronger pure CS destination. UIUC has a particularly deep reputation in computer science. Michigan is still top-tier, but its broader brand often shines most when you want CS combined with the rest of a very powerful all-around university.

UIUC tends to appeal most to the student who wants a department-first experience. Its CS program is one of the defining academic strengths of the university, and that shows up in the scale of course offerings, research depth, and the number of peers intensely focused on computing. If you are looking for the place that is most often name-checked specifically for computer science strength, UIUC usually gets that edge.

Michigan fits especially well for someone who wants elite CS inside a university with exceptional strength across many other fields. That matters if you might pair CS with business, engineering, economics, public policy, design, or another area where Michigan has a lot of institutional reach. The CS program is highly respected by employers and academics, but the case for Michigan is often about getting outstanding CS plus the advantages of a university with very broad prestige and interdisciplinary options.

For research-focused students, both schools offer serious opportunities, but UIUC often stands out for the density of its CS ecosystem. For students who value flexibility across schools and departments, Michigan can be especially attractive because the overall university infrastructure is so extensive.

So in the narrowest reading of your question, which program is considered better for CS alone, UIUC usually has the stronger reputation. Michigan is not far behind, and some students would reasonably prefer it, but if you are trying to identify which one gets the more consistent nod specifically for computer science, it is Illinois.
