For software jobs, is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or San Jose State better?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I’m mainly interested in getting a software job after college. Both seem like solid options, but I keep seeing different opinions online about which one has the stronger placement for tech.

I want to understand which school would generally give a better path into software recruiting and early career opportunities.

For software jobs, UIUC usually gives you the stronger overall platform, while San Jose State can be especially practical if you want to build your path straight through Silicon Valley during college. UIUC’s computer science reputation is nationally prominent, major tech employers recruit there consistently, and its alumni network in software is broad and well established. San Jose State benefits from location in the Bay Area, which can make internships, part-time tech work, and local networking unusually accessible.

UIUC makes the most sense for the student who wants the biggest national reach and the deepest recruiting bench. If you want a school whose name carries a lot of weight with software employers across regions, and you like the idea of structured recruiting pipelines, large engineering career fairs, and a very visible CS ecosystem, UIUC has the edge.

San Jose State is compelling for the student who is proactive, cost-conscious, and serious about using geography as an advantage. Being in San Jose means you are close to startups, mid-size tech firms, and major companies’ local offices, so it can be easier to stack internships during the school year instead of relying only on summers. Students who hustle, network well, and are comfortable carving out opportunities often do very well there, particularly if they want to stay in the Bay Area after graduation.

If your question is purely about which school gives the stronger path into software recruiting, I would lean UIUC. If your question is which school can lead to a software job with lower cost or better access to local internships while you are still in school, San Jose State becomes more attractive.
