Which is better for accounting careers, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State?

I'm trying to decide between UIUC and Ohio State and I want to study accounting. Both seem like strong schools, but I'm not sure which one would give me a better path into accounting careers after college.

I'm mostly thinking about internship opportunities, recruiting, and how well each school is viewed by accounting firms.

For accounting, UIUC usually has the stronger edge in employer reputation and accounting-specific recruiting. Its Gies College of Business is especially well known in accounting, and major firms recruit there very actively for audit, tax, and advisory roles. Ohio State is also a solid option, but if your question is specifically about the strongest path into accounting recruiting, UIUC tends to stand out more.

UIUC makes the most sense for the student who wants a campus with a particularly deep accounting pipeline and is aiming early at Big Four or other large public accounting firms. The accounting program has a long-standing reputation, and that matters because firms often return year after year to recruit where they know they can hire well-prepared students. If you want a school where accounting is one of the clearest academic strengths, UIUC is hard to overlook.

Ohio State fits the student who wants strong accounting opportunities but also values being tied to a large state flagship with a broad alumni base, especially in Ohio and the Midwest. Fisher is respected, and Columbus gives you access to internships during the school year in a way that can be very practical. For someone who wants a big-city adjacent experience and likes the idea of networking locally while in school, Ohio State can be very appealing.

On recruiting, both schools place students into major firms, but UIUC tends to have the more distinctive national reputation in accounting circles. That can help when you are competing for structured recruiting pipelines. Ohio State still offers very real access, especially if you think you may build your career in Ohio or nearby markets.

If your priority is the most recognized accounting brand and the deepest accounting-focused recruiting bench, I would lean UIUC. If you want strong outcomes with easier access to Columbus-area internships and a large in-state regional network, Ohio State is a very credible path.
