How do Northwestern and Columbia compare for internship opportunities?

I’m trying to figure out which school might give me better access to internships and career connections. I’m interested in how each one helps students find opportunities during the school year and over the summer.

I know both are strong schools, but I’m not sure how their locations, alumni networks, and career support compare in practice.

For internship access, Columbia has the more immediate advantage during the school year because being in New York City puts students close to finance, media, publishing, startups, nonprofits, and major corporate offices. It is simply easier there to take on part-time internships during a semester, attend employer events off campus, and build connections through proximity. Northwestern is also excellent for internships, but its biggest edge is a very engaged alumni network and strong school-specific pipelines, especially in journalism, consulting, theater and entertainment, engineering, and pre-med related research.

Columbia tends to fit the student who wants the city woven into everyday college life. If you want to intern during the semester without needing a full summer commitment, New York makes that much more practical. Students can often combine classes with work or networking in Manhattan, and Columbia’s alumni presence in industries concentrated in NYC is a real asset. That matters most in fields where relationships and repeated in-person exposure help, like finance, media, arts, policy, and some startup spaces.

Northwestern makes a lot of sense for someone who wants strong career support in a more campus-centered environment. Evanston is close enough to Chicago for internships and networking, and Chicago offers meaningful access in consulting, trading, healthcare, tech, and nonprofits. But Northwestern’s real strength in practice is how organized and loyal its alumni base is, along with the professional culture inside schools like Medill, McCormick, Kellogg’s undergraduate certificates, and its performing arts programs.

For summer internships, the gap narrows a lot. Both schools place students very well nationally, and at that point you are not limited to the local market. A Northwestern student can spend a summer in New York, San Francisco, or Chicago just as a Columbia student can. During the academic year, though, Columbia has the clearer location advantage, while Northwestern often feels more structured and community-driven in how students tap into opportunities.
